Brush Bristles … Thomas Gainsborough and physical distancing

The Blue Boy, Thomas Gainsborough, 1770.

Thomas Gainsborough was one of the most important portrait artists of the second half of the 18th century.

Sometimes he painted with special 6 foot brushes. Yes, 6 foot! That’s almost 2 meters, eh – plus an arm’s length of course. He placed the canvas and his sitters next to one another and painted at distance.
