
The above two images are from classwork during last year’s summer camps (ages 9 -12). I’ve been meaning to put together a blog that includes some of the classwork I’ve worked on with my students over the last couple of years, which resulted in some wonderful images.
Many artists have been fascinated by mounting panels together, from ancient mosaics onward. I’m sure this started with a practical need: it’s more convenient to make and work on small formats and then assemble, rather than handle a large surface: as true today as then. For me, it’s doubly interesting when each segment is worked independently, resulting in a fractured, distorted or perhaps even a warped view – and more so when a number of hands, mediums and styles are at work.
I think this is why images from classwork are so powerful, transcending the original reference. Here are a few favorites from my adult portrait classes:
