Weekly Brush Bristles … more from Winston

Daybreak at Cassis, Winston Churchill, 1920.

Last week’s “Brush Bristles” included a quote from Winston Churchill. Churchill was a avid painter, taking up painting at age 40 as he describes: “…experiments with a child’s paint-box led me the next morning to produce a complete outfit in oils.” He once commented “One may imagine that a man who blew the trumpet for his living would be glad to play the violin for his amusement.”

Not surprisingly, the eminently quotable Churchill had some other memorable things to say:

“Armed with a paint-box, one cannot be bored, one cannot be left at a loose end, one cannot have several days on one’s hands.”

“Light and colour, peace and hope, will keep painters company to the end of the day.”

“When I die and go to heaven, I want to spend the first million years painting – so I can get to the bottom of the subject.”

We can all relate to this sage advice: “When you get a thing the way you want it, leave it alone.” (maybe that’s not just for painting, eh?!)

– and finally this wonderful gem : “We cannot aspire to masterpiece, we may content ourselves with a joy ride in a paint-box. And for this Audacity is the only ticket.”
