Weekly Brush Bristles … on research

“Sergu”, Olle Baertling, 1962.

The Swedish artist Olle Baertling once said: “Art is research into the unknown, adding a little to the fund built up by earlier generations. This is the task of the artist.” In the same vein, Picasso stated:  “Paintings are but research and experiment. I never do a painting as a work of art. All of them are researches. I search constantly and there is a logical sequence in all this research.”

Research, the “not knowing” of an outcome, perhaps not caring either, is fundamental to creativity: “If you always do what you’ve always done – you’ll always get what you always got.” (anon…possibly Henry Ford)

I can absolutely relate to  George Grosz’s remark: “How did I become an artist? Endless curiosity, observation, research – and a great amount of joy of the thing”
