Weekly Brush Bristles…on abstraction

David Kearn, “Dance steps of the deep”.

Many modernists and classicists would agree that under a great painting often lurks a fine abstract image:

“The abstraction is what gives order to a work of art.” William F. Reese

“All painting, no matter what you are painting, is abstract in that it’s got to be organized,” David Hockney

“The longer you look at an object, the more abstract it becomes, and, ironically, the more real.” Lucian Freud

Perhaps the abstracted view provides a dimension that resonates deeply within our subconscious. Realism or abstraction – strive for the best of both!

“I was not ready for abstraction. I clung to earth and her dear shapes, her density, her herbage, her juice. I wanted her volume, and I wanted to hear her throb. I was tremendously interested in Lawren Harris’s abstraction ideas, but I was not yet willing to accept them for myself.”  Emily Carr
