Studio Insight: A watercolour study on Yupo

“Carla”, 20″x13″, Watercolour on Yupo synthetic paper.

I’ve recently been experimenting with watercolour on Yupo: a synthetic paper that has just enough “bite” to settle paint onto – although it’s essentially a plastic sheet and therefore non-absorbing. I posted some initial work in a previous post: http://www.breakabrush.com/2018/10/19/studio-insight-watercolour-on-yupo/

In a recent study, I captured the process as I worked.

The first image shows my initial wash – in it’s wet state with the water essentially puddling on the sheet.

In the second, I’ve added hair and the original wash is now dry. Notice that the “dry lakes” of pigment read quite differently from the “wet lakes” of the preceding image.

With the third image, I’ve added a second wash over the dry first wash. This immediately brings the earlier wash out and all of the colours lift and move! In this same, image the wash is again wet.

In the final portrait, you can see again how the now dry image is once again significantly different from the wet state. I have also added detail for features over the dry washes, being careful not to disturb things too much. To complete the work, I washed in the clothes.

All in all, a quite unique process and one where coaxing and adaptation are the rule. With this image, I didn’t need to take much paint out, however with Yupo that’s a breeze – the pigment is sitting on the surface and can be moved around or wiped off with a little water.

Let the water flow!
