From time to time, I’ve mentioned how I scale up drawings into larger paintings – by printing segments of the full size image and then taping them together. In this video I step through how I typically approach this task. I’ve often quipped that if Michelangelo had had a projector, he would have shone it at the ceiling of the Sistine chapel in order to transfer his drawings (though he also did some perspective magic to account for viewpoint and curvature). I would certainly use a projector if I had one, however my “middling technology” approach is actually serving pretty well.
It’s invariably interesting to see what happens when I offer up the image to the canvas. I normally then have to make adjustments to have the image work on the new scale, and this example is no exception – all part of the fun of painting!
