Out walking, I like to look at the graffiti: …is it art? … who was there? … is there a message? There has to be a story, or rather potential for a story and that’s the little bit of mystery which intrigues.
Some the spaces are reinvented year after year. Whoever wields the spray can does not necessarily pay much heed to the preceding image (do they even look at it?). So, for better or worse the art space is being continually refreshed. Sometimes in art classes I see the same dynamic, changing images on the same canvas, every few minutes: masterpieces coming and going like a time-lapse video.
Perhaps I’m intrigued by the currency of the images. Maybe it’s because it’s quite unlike how I work: continually building on images, keeping old studies hanging around, looking for places to evolve and use what I have. Very rarely will I cover something up entirely to begin again.
One local underpass has intrigued me year after year. As often as not there is something new and not always for the better. It will no doubt get a refresh again soon. Here’s a chronology over the last few years!
