Break-a-Brush Newsletter for November

What great Fall weather – plein-air painting last Sunday – in watercolour this time!

My plein-air painting Summer

Thanks to everyone who came out to support my exhibition at the OSA earlier this month, both directly and by many conversations and communications. All too short of course, however I was delighted to have had the exhibition space whilst the paintings were at their freshest – one or two still tacky. I’ve been referring to it as my littlest and largest show. My smallest solo exhibition, with the largest number of paintings.

Now in the on-line gallery

Recognizing that some could not get to downtown Ottawa, I’ve set up a virtual exhibition that will run through November at: https://www.davidkearn.com/galleries/one-summer-along-our-local-trans-canada-trail/

How to make a colour lighter!

Lightening a colour may seem easy however…adding white lightens, yet at the same time dilutes a colour´s intensity. Darkening the local area adjacent is often a better option as that will then make the colour appear lighter with no reduction of intensity – because there is now a higher value contrast.

When a little white is added try adding the colour complement adjacent: though the colour is washed out somewhat it will appear brighter because there is now a higher complementary colour contrast.
