Ultimate Orange
Outside my studio, I’ve had construction for the past year, longer actually. Construction is accompanied by a plethora of orange warning signs, of course. Whether by design or not, this year the City planted orange tulips and so, looking out, I’m confronted by orange. The flower beds are spectacularly vibrant, and this got me thinking – why are the tulips just a little more vibrant than the neighboring construction signs? The reflective, almost fluorescent signs are as bright as humans can make them, however the flowers have a distinct edge.
At distance they look to be pure orange, but that’s an illusion: in fact an orange outer moves to yellow and then dark in the centre. It’s the play between values and colours that makes them so vibrant, compared to the uniform orange of signage. That’s why I often use two colours together: being careful not to overly mix, the eye picks up variations which makes it brighter, more impactful.
