The Fall workshop season starts this coming weekend

Poetry and Painting

Just this morning I was reading some notes on the creative process by poet, A. E. Housman. For one poem specifically, he said part came to him completely formed as he took an afternoon stroll, a second part after sitting down a while and working on it that evening, however the final part was revised multiple times, taking over a year. This indeed rang true for me: one part inspiration (either before or after starting) one part conscious graft using learned routines and techniques and then a very troublesome part … which I would be tempted to call pure trial and error!!

Join us for the start of the workshop season this weekend:

30 Sept – 1 Oct,  “The Forgotten Impressionists”: One, a father figure to them all; another who died on the battlefield at the age of twenty-eight in the Franco-Prussian War; one who ceased showing his work at age 34, devoting himself to gardening and to building and racing yachts; one who remained British ´till his death; one who married Manet’s brother; another who inspired many Canadian artists who were members of the Beaver Hall Group and one, a now totally unknown painter, who was in fact the most successful artist at the 1880 impressionist exhibition!

Danish Artist to return money

Handling Fall Colours

Fall colour can be a bit overwhelming, all those full blown reds, oranges and yellows contrasting with strong complements – greens and blues. One trick is to build in areas of low colour saturation or indeed no-colour at all. The eye picks up the distinction between colour and no colour as a contrast itself. Perhaps a little more subtle, but definitely there, so wash out some area of colour and build in some chromatic grays!
