Derick Fage and I finish a short charcoal demo on Daytime Ottawa earlier this week. Thanks Derick!

I’m delighted to be a regular contributor on the show and look forward to working with Derick Fage and in partnership with the Ottawa School of Art, helping make art accessible to wider audiences.

New website page – Get Started!

With art, or any creative endevour, many find that simply getting started is half the battle. As Picasso once quipped “inspiration exists it just has to find you working”

Get Started! page: https://www.davidkearn.com/getstarted/

On this new web page I’ll be profiling some exercises and methods that are quick and fun to try – all without the need for extensive supplies. Send us an email at david@davidkearn.com and we’ll keep you up to date with new content as it is posted!

Wassily Kandinsky on Colour

Wassily Kandinsky, Composition 6, 1913.

“Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.” Wassily Kandinsky

Kandinsky saw colour as a vivid part of life saying: “Color is a power which directly influences the soul” and “color lives by its mysterious life.”

His writings seem to imply that he may well have had synesthesia tendencies too (maybe we all do): “The sound of colors is so definite that it would be hard to find anyone who would express bright yellow with base notes, or dark lake with the treble.”
