Art wherever you may be!

This Sunday, at 1 pm, I’ll be participating at the Ottawa School of Art Open House – and although you won’t see me at either campus – I’ll be on-line! I signed up to do a quick demo and to talk about how great on-line courses are as participative, supportive, flexible learning environments. Some of you have taken a selection of both in-studio and on-line courses. I think you may agree that both formats can really work and that the differences are wider than generally meets the eye.

For some, it’s just plain logistics which favour an on-line course, whilst others value being in their own creative space with their materials to hand. The commute to class and the dynamics of the live studio cannot be fully replicated on-line – getting covered in your neighbours paint for example! However the compensations are many and significant: group participation and exercises are well supported by easy-to-use technologies. Equally, individual coaching works really well with mark-up and image manipulation tools allowing perhaps more seamless communication between instructor and student. Subjects tend to be more structured, at least as compared to my expressive studio sessions, plus deep dives and diversions are just a click or tap away. There’s the inherent flexibility of recording the sessions should participants not be able to attend at a scheduled time – so, session review is also a useful feature here.

I provide course materials and background on an on-line course page which expands throughout the term. All-in-all, should you be thinking about an on-line course, there is much to be said for it as an option. I’m running two on-line courses this fall:

Our upcoming book – Creative Surge: Three Winters with Tom Thomson

All of the pieces for our book are settling nicely into place. Our big news is that Creative Surge is to be published with the support of the Ottawa School of Art! We’re delighted. We will naturally be having a launch at the school and are just finalizing details as I write. There will be a virtual launch as well. All of the threads are weaving together, so we are planning to announce the publishing date shortly. Watch this space!

Send us an email and we will keep you up-to-date with insights, pre-launch specials and anecdotes along the way!: david@davidkearn.com

Rogers Daytime Ottawa on hiatus this fall: We’re all hoping that Derick Fage, the wonderful host and producer, can work out something for continuing the show, however the program will not be starting this fall program as previously planned.

As we head into fall with sunrise slowing and sunset speeding up, I’m reminded of one of my favourite expressions, from Winslow Homer: “Neither sunrise nor sunset shall pass without my notice and thanks”
