Portrait Society of Canada Self Portrait Competition – a first!

This year the Portrait Society of Canada has opened the first ever Self Portrait Competition. The competition garnered over 200 entries,  including myself, or should I say my three selfs, above! All the entries are on-line and you can vote for your favorite: https://www.portraitsocietyofcanada.com/confvote.php?conf=164

Plein-air – finally!

Plein-air sketching and painting at Aylmer Marina, 2024

After some unforeseen commitments this spring, indolent weather and recent smoke warnings, we are looking forward to arranging some plein-air sessions in the coming months. We have a list of interested painters from last year, and should you like to be added to the email list for weekly details, just send us an email david@davidkearn.com

First meet-up is this week:

09:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Thursday 12 JUNE – BATE ISLAND

Bate Island is accessed from the Champlain Bridge – We will meet at the North East end of the Island – the final parking area in the anti-clockwise one-way loop, in the Eastern (downstream) portion of the Island.

Travis Doubt Exhibition at the OSA

Travis Doubt

A couple of days ago we dropped in on Break-a-Brusher Travis Doubt at the end of his recent exhibition, exploring locations along the old train line between Deschênes and Queen’s Park, in Aylmer. Excellent exhibition and our congratulations!

A New Colour?

My personal blue-green boundary – pretty close to this “new” colour I’d say.

A new colour, achieved by shining lasers into the eye to stimulate the colour receptors (no thanks) is apparently teal-ish but brighter. I’m sure I see unreal colours when I start to paint anyway – without the aid of lasers! Here are a couple of articles:

Fall Courses – already!

OSA, 35 George St.

The OSA should be announcing Fall courses by the end of this month. We’ve already posted our course contributions to the website in preparation: https://www.davidkearn.com/workshops/

Mirror, Mirror – on the wall or in your hand!

“The mirror is a good judge for you to know. It is marvelous how every weakness in a painting is so manifestly deformed in the Mirror”  Leon Battista Alberti (c1404 – 1472) – a Renaissance humanist author, artist, architect, poet, priest, linguist, philosopher and cryptographer; he epitomized the Renaissance Man.

As some of you well know, I second this idea … I don’t think I ever leave my studio without looking at my work in a mirror. It’s so effective because it forces a different view – the brain has to recognize and see the image all over again. Try it!
