Break-a-Brush! – Newsletter for May 2026

Everything is new again

Imagine two artists – they could both be me – side by side and starting their paintings. To one, staring blankly, I might say “here, have a few more sheets of paper, why don’t you just play around a little and see where it goes?” By this time the other me-artist may have developed an image and is now rushing headlong to oblivion. I might suggest quietly that he step back, relax and “consider what you have and what it means to you” and adding It may be gone in a flash.”

We are never the same approaching a new artwork: variation, searching, playing and changing moods are all part of evolving as an artist. Sometimes it comes naturally with the painting method and subject. Sometimes it’s triggered by a change in paper and tools favouring a new kind of result.

Then again, sometimes we need to actively mix it up, try something different – force the issue if you will. There are worlds of ways to trying something new. Every time a new work beckons, it’s an opportunity to opt for a new method or approach.

FAST APPROACHING WEEKEND WORKSHOP –  May 2-3 – OSA Orléans P26SWS12 – Impressionism and the Energy of Colour

Schedule: Saturday May 2 & Sunday May 3

Impressionism, perhaps more than any other movement, changed the course of art. The impact of a radical departure in use of colour, subjects and methods of painting, often “en plein air” still resonates with us today. Impressionists rejected traditional approaches to painting and looked at the effects of colour, light and nature itself. In this course, we will take our inspiration from the great painters who formed Impressionism and generations that followed in their footsteps: in Canada as well as Europe. Explore the romance of colour and outdoor/indoor motifs with Impressionism as your inspiration.

In each session, we will be demonstrating key aspects throughout and participants will be able to create a painting from scratch or equally, bring along a work-in-progress. Individual coaching will be provided and participants are welcome to use the medium of their choice. Appeals to realist, impressionist and modernist painters alike. Oil, Acrylic, Watercolour and Pastel are all welcome! Join us!
