This short course will focus on perspective in a range of real-world environments. Single, two and three-point linear perspective will be covered and perhaps equally importantly, some approaches on when to follow the rules and when to bend them. The role of composition, rendering and colour, including atmospheric perspective, will be explained and applied, separately and in conjunction with linear perspective. Instruction and coaching will clarify how perspective helps with various subjects and styles.

Introductory Notes
Expression and precision
The idea of perspective in some ways seems so “un-art” like: organizing space according to rigorous geometric rules. More like architectural renderings, however artists think nothing of placing a grid on a reference and copying spatial relationships. I would say there is a beauty in creating with geometry and devices that align with the way our eyes see the world.
Breadth and depth
Throughout this course, I’ll cover the basics and connect with drawing and painting processes. There is also a depth that I could go to, however I’ll generally provide references selected from the great range of information available.
Using a ruler
Throughout this on-line course, I develop forms without using a ruler. Should you be more comfortable using a ruler there’s absolutely no problem…I avoid the ruler in part to show that it’s the principles which count and results are not dependent on accuracy.
Materials
Choice of materials is yours to explore. I will use a range during the course and the principles are of course independent of materials. I’ve included some painting materials information for those who might be interested in my methods. They are general in nature and suitable, whether I’m tackling landscapes, cityscapes or portraits!
