Saturday morning Painting Workshop series: Inspired by Canadian Masters!
Tom Thomson: The Mystery and the Magic – 23rd and 30th Jan 2021
Tom Thomson directly influences our lives with his iconic Canadian paintings. He was a major innovator in the movement which later became the Group of Seven. Thomson died under mysterious circumstances, before the Group of Seven was formed, and this only adds to his mystique. Explore the romance of Canadian landscape motifs with Tom Thomson as your inspiration.
Spirit of the Pacific: Emily Car – 6th and 13th Feb 2021
Emily Carr blended Pacific and native themes in ways that were uniquely her own. Carr brought the north to the south, the west to the east and glimpses into indigenous motifs. Throughout her career spanning 5 decades, Emily began with watercolours, discovered oils and impressionism and embraced new ways of seeing. This workshop will appeal to painters interested in exploring combinations of landscapes, figures and abstracted forms in modernist styles.
Lawren Harris’s Railcar: Your Ticket to ride with The Group of Seven: – 20th and 27th Feb 2021
During annual trips to the north shore of Lake Superior, Lawren Harris led members of the group and evolved the style the Group of Seven is best known for: rich, decorative colours melding with deeply-felt perceptions of nature. Whether inspired by the stark and mystical landscapes of Lawren Harris, the lyrical styles of J.E.H. MacDonald and Arthur Lismer or the consummate paint mastery of A.Y. Jackson, join us for a workshop in the company of the most legendary group of Canadian painters.
Modern Montreal: the Beaver Hall Group – 6th and 13th Mar 2021
The Beaver Hall Group was the first Canadian artist association in which women played a central role. The group included wonderful painters such as Emily Coonan, Prudence Heward and Lilias Torrance-Newton. The Group of Seven’s A. Y. Jackson and Edwin Holgate were also prominent members. Whether your interest is in portraits, the figure or landscapes, join us for two inspiring Saturdays in the company of this delightful group of artists.
Each workshop runs over 2 consecutive Saturday Mornings – Zoom 9:30am to 10:30am and 11:30am to 12:30pm
We will be demonstrating key aspects throughout and participants will be able to create a painting from scratch or equally, bring along a work-in-progress. Individual coaching will be provided and participants are welcome to use any medium of their choice. These workshops appeal to realist, impressionist and modernist painters alike. Oil, Acrylic and Watercolour painters are all welcome!
