I’ve said from time to time: “My paintings are mostly mistakes – I just decide which ones to keep”.
This idea was elegantly summed up by Scott Adams (the Dilbert guy!) with: “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.”
Giving yourself permission to have fun, experiment, innovate and defer judgement are almost certainly part of all creative endevours. Later, there is a place for reflection and assessment and as Picasso advised: “Art is the elimination of the unnecessary.”
